Xinhua News Agency, Shanghai, April 30 (Reporters Zhou Rui and Qi Yue) On April 29, President Xi Jinping visited the New Development Bank of the BRICS in Shanghai and met with New Development Bank President Rosef. In an interview with the media, Rousseff said that President Xi Jinping has put forward the expectation of "starting the second 'golden decade' of high-quality development" to the New Development Bank, which has pointed out the direction for the bank's future work.
Faced with the media, Rosef said that President Xi Jinping’s support to the New Development Bank is very important, whether in the past, present or future. This will promote the New Development Bank to embark on the second "golden decade" of high-quality development and polish the golden signs of emerging forces in the international financial system and global southern cooperation.
During the sixth meeting of BRICS leaders in 2014, leaders of China, Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa witnessed the signing of the Agreement on Establishing a New Development Bank in Fortaleza, Brazil. In July 2015, the New Development Bank was officially opened. "I am honored to receive the respected President Xi Jinping at the Xinkai Bank headquarters today. I proudly recall that we announced the establishment of the New Development Bank to the world in 2014." Rosef, who served as Brazilian President, said, "President Xi Jinping has promoted and witnessed the transformation of the New Development Bank from a vision to a reality." "President Xi Jinping has long provided strong support for the development and growth of the New Development Bank." Rosef said that the past decade can be regarded as a "golden decade" of the development and growth of the New Development Bank. Over the past decade, the bank has approved 120 projects and a total loan amount of about US$40 billion, providing financing support for the development of member countries in many fields such as infrastructure construction, clean energy, environmental protection, and digital infrastructure.
President Xi Jinping pointed out during the meeting that the New Development Bank is the first multilateral development institution founded and dominated by emerging market countries and developing countries, and is an innovation in the joint efforts of the global South to strengthen itself. In response, Rosef said that the New Development Bank will continue to uphold the spirit of the BRICS cooperation mechanism, practice its original aspirations, continue to focus on the needs of the global south, and support the development of the global south.
"The New Development Bank will be committed to serving the investment and development of southern countries around the world, especially the BRICS countries, and will deepen its efforts in key areas such as infrastructure construction, logistics, and digital infrastructure that have an important impact on emerging market countries and developing countries. It must also firmly promote investment in scientific and technological innovation and help all countries take the path of steady development." Rosef said.
Shanghai's open and inclusive urban temperament provides a good environment for the operation of the new development bank. Rosef said that the Shanghai-based new development bank will make good use of China's huge advantages in global industry, technology and innovation, and make full use of digital tools such as artificial intelligence and big data to strive to grow into a "new multilateral development bank in the 21st century."
Rosef appreciates the Chinese government's firm protection of global southern interests in the current turbulent world situation, firmly supports multilateralism, firmly defend international fairness and justice, and firmly promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. "President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government's firm, calm, clear and stable stance has won widespread admiration and appreciation from southern countries around the world, which once again confirms President Xi Jinping's position as a great contemporary leader," she said.
