On the afternoon of October 31, local time, President Xi Jinping met with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at request during the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju, South Korea.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China and Japan are separated by a narrow strip of water and are important neighbors to each other. Promoting the long-term, healthy and stable development of China-Japan relations is in line with the general expectations of the people of the two countries and the international community. China is willing to work with Japan to maintain the political foundation of bilateral relations in accordance with the principles and directions established in the four political documents between China and Japan, promote strategic and mutually beneficial relations, and strive to build a constructive and stable China-Japan relationship that meets the requirements of the new era.

Xi Jinping emphasized that China-Japan relations currently face both opportunities and challenges. It is hoped that the new Japanese cabinet will establish a correct understanding of China, value the efforts and efforts of the older generation of politicians and people from all walks of life in the two countries to develop Sino-Japanese relations, and adhere to the general direction of peace, friendship, and cooperation between China and Japan. First, we must abide by the important consensus. We will implement political consensuses such as "comprehensively promote strategic and mutually beneficial relations", "be mutual partners and not pose threats to each other", and "take history as a mirror and face the future". We must abide by and implement the clear provisions of the four political documents between China and Japan on major principled issues such as history and Taiwan to ensure that the foundation of China-Japan relations is not damaged or shaken. The "Murayama Statement" deeply reflects on Japan's history of aggression and apologizes to the victimized countries. This spirit is worth carrying forward. The second is to adhere to win-win cooperation. The Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China drew up a blueprint for China's development during the 15th Five-Year Plan, and there is broad space for China-Japan cooperation. China and Japan can strengthen cooperation in high-end manufacturing, digital economy, green development, finance, medical care and elderly care, and third-party markets, and jointly maintain the stability and smoothness of the multilateral trading system and industrial and supply chains. The third is to promote people-to-people bonds. Continue to carry out communication between the government, political parties, legislative bodies, etc., deepen and expand people-to-people and local exchanges, and improve national sentiment. The fourth is to strengthen multilateral cooperation. We should uphold the principles of good-neighborliness, equality, mutual benefit, and non-interference in each other's internal affairs, practice true multilateralism, and promote the building of an Asia-Pacific community. Fifth, properly manage differences. Focus on the overall situation, seek common ground while reserving differences, gather common ground and resolve differences, and avoid letting conflicts and differences define the relationship between the two countries.

Sanae Takaichi said that China is an important neighbor of Japan, and Japan and China bear major responsibilities for regional and world peace and prosperity. Japan is willing to maintain high-level exchanges with China, intensify exchanges at all levels, strengthen communication, enhance understanding, promote cooperation, solidly advance the strategic mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries, and build a constructive and stable Japan-China relationship. On the Taiwan issue, Japan will adhere to the position stated in the 1972 Japan-China Joint Statement.
